TCU, Gary Patterson agree to two-year contract extension

Not that there was much doubt, but it doesn’t appear the Gary Patterson Era at TCU will be ending anytime soon.

TCU announced in a press release Tuesday that Patterson has signed a new contract agreement with the university. The long-time head coach is now signed into the 2022 calendar year; his previous contract ran through 2020.

As a private institution, TCU does not have to reveal the financial particulars of the revamped deal, although it’s fair to assume a raise is involved. According to the USA Today salary database, Patterson was the fourth-highest paid head coach in the Big 12 last season at $3.94 million.

“Gary Patterson is synonymous with TCU and Fort Worth,” athletic director Chris Del Conte said. “His value to our community goes beyond the football field. It’s obviously a great day for our Horned Frogs Family when Coach Patterson reiterates that TCU and Fort Worth are his home!”

Patterson will be entering his 16th season as the head coach, having guided the Horned Frogs to a school-record 143 wins. From the school’s release:

He has totaled 20 national coach of the year awards, while his .753 winning percentage (143-47) ranks fifth among active coaches nationally. He is the third-longest tenured FBS head coach in the nation.

The Horned Frogs are 23-3 over the last two seasons, including a 15-3 mark in the Big 12. TCU has finished in the top 10 in back-to-back seasons and five times in the last eight years. In 15 seasons under Patterson, TCU has posted six top-10 finishes and 10 in the top 25. TCU has reached the 10-win mark 10 times in the last 14 seasons, including nine 11-win campaigns.
