‘Husker QB Tanner Lee granted another season by NCAA

Tanner Lee‘s time in Lincoln will extend out a little further than first expected.

Nebraska confirmed over the weekend that Lee has been granted an additional season of eligibility by the NCAA. While he’ll be forced to sit out the 2016 season to satisfy NCAA transfer bylaws, his eligibility has been extended from 2017 on through the 2018 season.

Rivals.com explains the situation surrounding the NCAA granting Lee’s request for a waiver:

Lee was granted the additional year after the NCAA created a new rule that lets players petition their transfer based on a change in system/scheme due to a coaching move. The NCAA granted Lee’s request, as Tulane went from a pro-style offense to a run-based option attack.

After announcing in early January that he would be transferring from the Green Wave, Lee moved on to the Cornhuskers later that month.

While at Tulane, Lee started 10 games as a redshirt freshman in 2014, then started nine more in 2015. In those two seasons, he threw 23 touchdowns vs. 21 interceptions. While it counts sack totals, Lee ran for minus-287 yards during his time with the Green Wave.

Next season, Lee will do battle with a pair of four-star California quarterbacks for the starting job -- 2016 signee Patrick O’Brien and 2017 commit Tristan Gebbia. This season, O’Brien is expected to behind starter Tommy Armstrong and backup Ryker Fyfe, both seniors, on the depth chart. Sophomore AJ Bush could be in the mix next year as well.
