Starting WVU guard Adam Pankey arrested on drunk-driving charge

It’s not been a very positive last couple of weeks for a West Virginia football program that should be focused on the start of a new season.

Late last month, Larry Jefferson, expected to be a part of WVU’s defensive line rotation, was arrested on drug charges and removed from the roster. This past week, two-year starting safety Dravon Askew-Henry sustained a torn ACL that will knock him out for the season.

Now, with the opener less than three weeks away, starting left guard Adam Pankey (pictured, large player lifting smaller one) was arrested very early Sunday morning and charged with driving under the influence. Pankey’s arrest came after he was involved in a one-car accident.

Police found Pankey’s car upside down off the road with Pankey still inside. Pankey was pulled from the vehicle with minor injuries and wasn’t taken to the hospital. He was instead taken into custody and charged before being released on bond.

According to WVMetroNews.com, Pankey’s BAC was .147, nearly twice the legal limit of .08.

“I have been made aware of the situation and am gathering the facts at this time,” WVU head football coach Dana Holgorsen said in a statement. “When all the facts are in I will take appropriate action.”

Pankey has started 25 games the past two seasons. He started 13 at left tackle in 2014, and 12 at left guard in 2015.
