Tar Heels losing QB Caleb Henderson to transfer

It appears the competition for North Carolina’s backup quarterback job has come to an end.

Entering summer camp, redshirt sophomore Caleb Henderson and redshirt freshman Nathan Elliott were neck-and-neck in their battle to back up starter Mitch Trubisky. According to a report from Rivals.com, the job will go to Elliott as Henderson has decided to transfer out of the Tar Heels football program.

It’s unclear if Henderson made the decision after being informed that Elliott won the No. 2 job, or if he made it independent of the competition. At least according to the player, his decision had nothing to do with football.

My decision was a family decision. Had nothing to do with football.

A four-star member of UNC’s 2014 recruiting class, Henderson was rated as the No. 10 pro-style quarterback in the country and the No. 7 player at any position in the state of Virginia.

After redshirting as a true freshman, Henderson played in a pair of games last season. He attempted one pass, which fell incomplete.

With Henderson’s departure, Trubisky is the only quarterback on the roster who has attempted a pass at the collegiate level.
