Hours after Western Kentucky opened their season with a 32-point romp over Rice, a Hilltopper player narrowly averted serious injury — or even death — in connection to an incident outside of a Bowling Green nightclub.
The university confirmed in a statement Friday afternoon that Trae Jones “was wounded in his left shoulder by a stray bullet earlier this morning at an off-campus location.” It was further noted that “[t]he injury is non-life threatening, he received no large structural damage, and is under physician care.”
Just what led up to Jones being shot is very much unclear at this point in time. From the Bowling Green Daily News:
Details about the circumstances of the shooting were scant Friday morning, but Ward said the probe began when a woman went to The Medical Center and said she had been assaulted. Officers investigating her claim were eventually led to Jones, who apparently had been shot outside the club.
Police continue to conduct an investigation into both incidents, and it’s uncertain whether the two are connected.
Since playing in five games as a redshirt freshman in 2014, he hasn’t seen the field. That includes the opener Thursday night.
