Notre Dame will play both DeShone Kizer and Malik Zaire at quarterback tonight at Texas. We know this. Brian Kelly has admitted as much.
Texas head coach Charlie Strong has kept his quarterback derby a complete surprise, despite promising all off-season to do the opposite and the fact that Notre Dame undoubtedly enters tonight’s game unafraid to face either true freshman Shane Buechele or reclamation project senior Tyrone Swoopes.
The Longhorns released a depth chart Sunday afternoon listing both Buechele and Swoopes as co-starters at quarterback.
Of course, one quarterback will have to take the field first against the Irish, and Strong has indicated whoever does that against Notre Dame is the team’s starter. Both players will play — tonight, at least — but one will play more than the other.
Those in the know out of Austin have reported without reporting that Buechele will be that guy, with Swoopes playing in short yardage.
Either way, we’ll find out soon enough. Texas and Notre Dame kick off at 7:30 p.m. ET (ABC).
