Navy QB Tago Smith suffers torn ACL

Malcolm Perry won’t be returning to the Brigade this year. The Navy signal caller that pulled an E. King Gill after being called from Navy’s cadet section to join the game did so because the Midshipmen’s starting quarterback Tago Smith suffered an injury during an eventual 52-16 blowout of Fordham.

Perry racked up seven carries for 30 yards in the second half, and will have the opportunity to acquire more this season after the program announced Monday Smith has been lost for the season to a torn ACL.

For Smith, the news is a lightning strike of bad luck. The Fayetteville, Ga., native waited three years behind Keenan Reynolds, appearing in 18 games in his first three seasons, before finally earning his starting role as a senior.

And then he lost it less than one game in.

He’ll close his 2016 season completing his only pass for 45 yards while rushing 10 times for 97 yards and two touchdowns.

Smith will be eligible to receive a medical redshirt and return in 2017, should he so choose.
