With buyout payments from USC drying up in late June, Lane Kiffin has seen his new employer give him a bit of a financial bump.
Friday, the compensation committee arm of Alabama’s Board of Trustees approved a contract extension for Kiffin that will pay the Tide offensive coordinator $1.4 million from July 1 through when the contract expires Feb. 28. The end date is likely a moot point as Kiffin is expected to get another shot at being a head coach during the next spinning of the coaching carousel.
Because of buyout payments from the Trojans that were in the neighborhood of $2.5 million annually the past couple of years, Kiffin made $680,000 in his first two seasons as the Tide’s coordinator. Through June 30 of this year, Kiffin had been paid $714,000, al.com reported.
With the new agreement, which come just under a week after his new school took his old school to the woodshed, Kiffin is now the highest-paid offensive coordinator in college football. LSU’s Cam Cameron, believe it or not, had ben the holder of that title even with the $300,000 pay cut he took in the offseason.
Both of those coaches lag behind former LSU and current Texas A&M defensive coordinator John Chavis’ $1.5 million.
