Sooner backup QB says Baker Mayfield will ‘light up’ Buckeyes’ ‘really basic defense’

Ohio State may not necessarily need bulletin-board material for their upcoming game, but, if they do, one member of the opposition has provided it.

No. 3 OSU will travel to Norman Saturday to take on No. 14 Oklahoma in one of the most highly-anticipated matchups of the young season. Ahead of that battle of ranked squads, OU backup quarterback Austin Kendall, whose father is a Columbus native and long-time OSU fan, appeared on FOX Sports Oklahoma to discuss the game.

What he said will, one way or another, go down in whatever lore this game writes.

“I think they have a really basic defense,” Kendall said very matter-of-factly. “I think we can go out there and, I mean, Baker [Mayfield], he’ll light them up. I’m really looking forward to it. If my number’s called, I think I can do the same.”

After the first two games of the season against Bowling Green and Tulsa, the Buckeyes’ “very basic defense” is currently...

  • leading the nation in defensive touchdowns (three) and turnovers (nine)
  • tied for third in scoring defense (6.5 ppg)
  • third in defensive passing efficiency (62.33)
  • fifth in total defense (216 ypg)
  • 14th in run defense (66 ypg)
Some of the Buckeyes responsible for putting up those numbers didn’t take kindly to Kendall’s words, and took to Twitter to voice their own opinions.
