Texas president tweets support for beleaguered Charlie Strong, staff

The question becomes, will this end up being the dreaded vote of confidence for Charlie Strong.

Shortly after Texas’s embarrassing Week 5 loss to Oklahoma State, athletic director Mike Perrin, when asked about the head coach’s future, was quoted as saying, “We need to evaluate what happened here. ... I’m evaluating everything.” Monday, a report emerged in which an unnamed source stated that coach is “very close” to losing a job, although “there will be no move made during the year on Strong.”

Add in Strong demoting his defensive coordinator, and the fires were raging in and around Austin as the coach’s future ostensibly hangs in the balance.

Wednesday, though, as the seat underneath his head football coach grew seemingly by the hour, UT’s president brought out a bucket of room-temperature water in an attempt to cool things down.

Had a great call w/ Coach Strong. We’re behind our student-athletes and coaches as they prepare for OU and rest of the season @Longhorn_FB

In three-plus seasons, Strong has gone 13-16 overall. Most distressing from the athletic department’s side, he’s now below .500, 9-10, in Big 12 play. But, from the university’s side, just how much support does Strong have?

I’ve said it before and will say again. Fans have no idea how bad university president Greg Fenves wants Charlie Strong to succeed at Texas.
