Georgia Tech has reversed course from earlier in the week and gone ahead and suspended two football players who were involved in an incident at a fraternity house near campus.
“Georgia Tech football players Jalen Johnson and Christian Campbell have been suspended from upcoming games pending completion of the investigation into Sunday’s incident by the Office of Student Integrity,” the school said in a statement. “Due to federal privacy restrictions Georgia Institute of Technology cannot discuss further details of either the ongoing investigation or of disciplinary actions against students.”
Johnson was arrested on charges of simple battery, along with LSU offensive lineman Donavaughn Campbell -- the younger brother of the Yellow Jackets’ defensive back. The Campbells had been reunited in Atlanta with the Tigers off over the weekend and Georgia Tech hosting Duke on Saturday. After news surfaced of Donavaughn’s arrest, the freshman was suspended on Tuesday by LSU officials.
Georgia Tech head coach Paul Johnson had previously been supportive of keeping both Johnson and Campbell with the team ahead of their trip to play North Carolina on Saturday but was apparently overruled by school administrators. Neither was expected to start in the game but could have contributed on special teams.
