Dalvin Cook inches closer to school rushing record as No. 18 Florida State rolls over Boston College

About the only interesting decision in Florida State’s 45-7 romp over division rival Boston College came midway through the second half when head coach Jimbo Fisher opted not to re-insert tailback Dalvin Cook back into the game.

The outcome was well in hand for the Seminoles on Friday night by that point in the third quarter but Cook was just 19 yards away from breaking Warrick Dunn’s school record for career rushing yards. With FSU on the road next week at Syracuse, it would have been a prime opportunity for the junior to break the record in front of the home friends.

Aside from that moment however, things went about as expected for the No. 18 team in the country as they throughly dominated the Eagles in every facet.

Quarterback Deondre Francois started hot and finished with 183 yards and three scores in just under three quarters worth of work. The signal-caller was a bit beat up by the BC defense and was replaced by backup Sean Maguire, who tossed a pair of touchdown passes himself.

Cook finished with 108 yards on the ground on 18 carries and scored his first touchdown against Boston College in three career tries against the team’s stingy run defense.

They were not the best unit on the field however as the Seminoles starters were dominant against the lackluster Eagles offense. It took a late 75 yard scoring drive to prevent a shutout (against FSU backups) and top the 100 yard mark for total offense at the same time. Starting quarterback Patrick Towles finished the night just 3-of-11 for 29 yards while Myles Willis provided the lone highlight of the night for the team with a 39 yard run in the first half.

The victory doesn’t do much for Florida State other than continue to improve their chances at a quality bowl game. They’ll hit the road to play the Orange next week before closing out the regular season with in-state rival Florida at the end of the month.

Boston College’s hopes of a bowl game did take a hit with the loss but the door isn’t completely shut with the team dropping to 4-6 on the year.
