New Texas coach Tom Herman is bringing just about everybody with him up Highway 290 from Houston to Austin.
The Longhorns announced six Cougars assistants to Herman’s staff on Tuesday. They are:
- Oscar Giles
- Corby Meekins
- Derek Warehime
- Jason Washington
- Fernando Lovo
- Derek Chang
Lovo will serve as assistant AD for football operations, while Chang will continue his role as Herman’s director of player personnel.
Titles and responsibilities for the first four will be announced when the full staff is hired, but it’s a safe bet Warehime will handle UT’s offensive line while Giles will coach the defensive line — positions each held at Houston.
Giles is actually in his fourth tour of duty in Austin. A former Longhorn defensive end, Giles met Herman as a graduate assistant in 1999 and served as Texas’s defensive line coach from 2005-13. Meekins, a longtime Texas high school coach, handled tight ends and fullbacks at Houston while Washington coached cornerbacks and special teams for the Coogs.
“I’m thrilled to have all of these guys on board and hitting the ground running during this really important time for us,” Herman said in a statement. “All four of our coaches were with us in Houston and have strong ties and relationships in the state of Texas, so they will be a huge asset in recruiting right now. They’re terrific coaches, as well, so they’ll do a great job building and developing our team going forward. Fernando and Derek do a tremendous job, are totally aligned with our coaches and critical to the success of our program.”
Unspoken in Tuesday’s release is that Herman’s offensive coordinator Major Applewhite, defensive coordinator Todd Orlando, associate head coach/safeties coach Craig Naivar, wide receivers coach Darrell Wyatt and running backs coach Kenneth Pope remain in Houston through the Cougars’ to-be-determined bowl game.
It remains to be seen how many of those assistants will join Herman in Austin once available, but it’s a near lock Naivar and Orlando will, assuming Orlando does not land the Houston head job.
