Reports: Ole Miss hires Phil Longo as new OC, Wesley McGriff as DC

Recruiting is in the middle of a dead period right now but Hugh Freeze landed two key recruits on Thursday.

According to Fox Sports and ESPN, Ole Miss is set to hire Sam Houston State’s Phil Longo as the Rebels new offensive coordinator and will be bringing back Wesley McGriff as defensive coordinator.

The Rebels announced that defensive coordinator Dave Wommack had decided to retire from coaching at the end of year while co-offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Dan Werner was on his way out as well.

Longo is an Air Raid disciple and led the most prolific offense in FCS football, averaging 547 yards per game this season and topping the division in red zone scoring.

McGriff is a familiar face in the SEC and was the cornerbacks coach at Ole Miss in 2012. He comes over from Auburn after spending two years with the Tigers and the two before that with the New Orleans Saints.

After a disappointing 5-7 season in 2016 and an ongoing NCAA investigation that has no end in sight, you figured staff changes would be coming to Oxford heading into the new year and it appears Freeze has made his decision as to what kind of new direction he wants to take the program with McGriff and Longo.
