WELL, WELL, WELL, LOOK WHO’S ‘CHEATING’ NOW

I love the smell of irony in the evening.Less than a week after accusing -- falsely, as it turns out -- Urban Meyer of being a recruiting cheat, Lane Kiffin has been certified as one. And, in the ultimate kick in the ass, he was turned in by his own school.According to the Knoxville News Sentinel, Kiffin, along with assistant coach Ed Orgeron, has been officially reprimanded by Tennessee for a pair of recruiting violations that are, in all fairness, very minor in nature. One of the incidents involved the staging of a mock press conference involving potential recruits, while the other involved a smoke machine being utilized as a recruit entered the field at Neyland Stadium. Kiffin, by the way, is the second former USC assistant to be popped for smoke machine monkey business, following in the footsteps of new Washington head coach Steve Sarkisian.Anyway, Tennessee compliance officials were not aware of the minor violations until they read about them in a local newspaper. Immediately after finding out about the incidents, the university sent both the SEC and the NCAA a letter notifying them of the issues they’d discovered."The violations occurred due to an incorrect assumption by the football coaching staff regarding official visit activities,” Tennessee said in the letter, which was obtained by The News Sentinel through an open recrods request. “They understand that they must ask questions of the compliance office about anything ‘creative’ regarding campus visits."Once again, these violations are minor in nature and will not result in anything other than the reprimand. However, given Kiffin’s embarrassing display last week at the expense of Meyer and the University of Florida, you can bet there are a whole helluva lot of people in the SEC walking around with mile-wide smirks plastered to their collective faces.
