In one of the one-liner updates we did over the weekend, we made note of a Mike Bianchi piece in which the Orlando Sentinel columnist makes the case for Urban Meyer to be the highest-paid coach in the NCAA.
While there’s nothing to really say about his argument -- we agree wholeheartedly -- there was one very small part of the article that caught our attention. And, since we are well into the ssslllooowww part of the news cycle, we’ll dive into it a little bit.
Bianchi supports his case for Meyer by noting the salaries and/or clauses contained in the contracts of other SEC head coaches. In particular, Bianchi writes the following: “LSU Coach Les Miles has a clause in his contract that says he must make at least $1,000 more than any other coach in the Southeastern Conference.”
At first blush, it’s a seemingly innocuous insertion that carries just a tinge of the grandiose self-indulgence that most successful college coaches are known to possess.
However, what would happen if Meyer would have the exact same clause inserted into whatever new contract he receives from Florida? What if Nick Saban does the same during the course of contract talks currently underway with Alabama?
If more than one coach is contractually obligated to be paid $1K more than anyone else in a particular conference, how exactly would that be handled?
Inquiring -- and bored -- minds want to know.
And, yes, the start of summer camps cannot get here soon enough or fast enough. Not to mention the start of the regular season itself.
