Samuel states his UGA backfield case

There may be some uncertainty as to just who will replace Knowshon Moreno in the Georgia backfield, but sophomore Richard Samuel is doing his best to clear up the confusion early on.

During a morning scrimmage -- the first one for the Bulldogs this preseason -- Samuel rushed for 108 yards on five carries and scored two touchdowns. Additionally, the back was on the receiving end of a 70-yard touchdown pass.

Needless to say, it could lead to a new look atop the UGA depth chart.

We probably will re-rack them,” head coach Mark Richt said. “I don’t particularly care who’s No. 1 today or tomorrow. I’m looking for guys that are ready to play. I’m not even looking for starters. I’m looking for guys that if we put them in the game, they can function and play winning football. That’s really and truly all I’m concerned about right now.”

Caleb King, the prohibitive favorite for the starting job, carried five times for 18 yards. Another contender, redshirt freshman Carlton Thomas, gained 60 yards on five carries.

To be completely fair, Samuel and King did the majority of their damage against the No. 2 Georgia defense.
