Starting Hawkeye corner breaks ankle

Both literally and figuratively, the Iowa Hawkeye defense has suffered a bad break as starting cornerback Jordan Bernstine suffered a broken ankle, his high school coach confirmed to the Des Moines Register.

According to Tom Mihalovich, Bernstine suffered the injury as he was serving as a gunner in special teams drills. Referring to the severity of the injury, Mihalovich said that his former player “snapped it pretty good.”

“That’s a real downer,” the coach said. “He busts his tail to get that starting spot, and trying to keep it.”

Bernstine had battled injuries throughout his Hawkeye, but had finally earned the starting job exiting spring practice this offseason.

Now, the junior DB is facing surgery to repair the damage.
