Coy Carroll not tipping his QB hand

When Aaron Corp‘s injury was coupled with the performance of Matt Barkley in the immediate aftermath of “The Cracked Fibula Heard ‘Round the World”, it almost seemed as if everyone was handing the starting job to the true freshman.

However, Barkley’s performances of late, plus Corp’s recovery ahead of the initial timeline, has some taking a pause from all of the hype-filled plaudits being tossed at the quarterback’s feet.

Among them? Head coach Pete Carroll.

The Trojan coach not only isn’t ready to name a starter -- as should be expected -- but refused to reveal a time line for the naming of his QB when pressed on the issue by reporters.

“It’ll really just be a feeling,” he said Wednesday. “I don’t have any number of days. We’re going to wait and see how he (Corp) looks, see how confident he is and see if he’s ready and willing and able to execute.

“I’m not going to guess. I’m just going to wait until I feel it.

“I can’t tell you any more than that. I don’t know if there’s a plan for this thing. We don’t have one in mind right now.”

Speaking of Corp’s injury, the Orange County Register reported that the sophomore did his most extensive work since suffering the injury on Aug. 10. While it was initially thought that Corp wouldn’t return until the week of the regular-season opener, he is now on track for a return at some point next week.

Carroll seems anxious to see Corp return and if he can regain the starting job he held when he went down.

“I think so,” Corp said when asked if two weeks was enough time for Corp to overtake Barkley and be ready for the opener. “I still would’ve rather had a whole camp, but I think two weeks would give me the right amount of time to prepare.”

“I want to get Aaron a real good shot to show he’s the No. 1 guy like he had been when he got hurt. We’ll just see. I don’t know how long that takes.”
