Grothe injury overshadows Bulls’ shutout rout

South Florida may have won their battle with Charleston Southern, but an injury to “franchise” quarterback Matt Grothe may have cost the Bulls the war.

Grothe suffered what the St. Petersburg Times called a potentially serious injury in the Bulls’ 59-0 win, going down with a left knee sprain in the second quarter.

As is his wont, Grothe was scrambling for a first down when he was tackled and had his left leg bent underneath him.

Almost immediately, head coach Jim Leavitt knew something was amiss with his star QB.

“I saw right away when he planted that something ... it was almost like before it happened, something told me to sprint out to him,” Leavitt said. “Matt’s a franchise guy. We all know that. What he’s done in college football is extraordinary. He’s one of the great names out there. Hopefully it won’t be too bad, but we have to wait and see. We don’t know. But he’s a special guy.”

Grothe was replaced by redshirt freshman B.J. Daniels. There’s no word yet on the severity of the injury or if Grothe will miss any playing time.
