‘Restricted’ Mays takes a step backwards

The early prognosis was that Southern Cal’s Taylor Mays was on track to return to the playing field this weekend.

That early optimism, however, seemed to take a hit yesterday.

The Trojans’ All-American safety was restricted in practice as he continues his recovery from a sprained right knee that forced him to miss the loss to Washington. If you take head coach Pete Carroll‘s words at face value, it looks north of dicey as to whether Mays will be available this weekend.

I don’t think that’s a great sign,” Carroll said of Mays being limited in practice.

“I was hoping he’d be ready. That doesn’t mean he won’t make it (for Washington State).

“I wished he would be able to do more than that. He did all the early-practice stuff and got the assignment stuff and all that, but we’re still restricting him. That’s not great for him.”

According to the Orange County Register, Mays is able to run full-speed straight ahead but is having issues with cutting and planting.
