Chairman of FSU Board calls for Bowden to step down

Yesterday, two Florida columnists called for this to be the last season of the Bobby Bowden Era at Florida State.

Today, one of the most powerful alums of the school is calling for the same.

In a conversation with the Tallahassee Democrat, FSU Board of Trustees Jim Smith says it’s time to let the world know that this will be the legendary coach’s last season with the Seminoles.

“My hope is, frankly, that we’ll go ahead and, if we have to, let the world know that this year will be the end of the Bowden Era,” said Smith, who has served as secretary of state, chief of staff in the governor’s office and state attorney general. "... I do appreciate what he’s done for us, what he’s done for the program, what’s he done really for the state of Florida.

“But I think the record will show that the Seminole Nation has been more than patient. We have been in a decline not for a year or two or three, but I think we’re coming up on seven or eight. I think enough is enough.”

Needless to say, we think you can officially attach the word “embattled” to any future mention of Bowden.

If Bowden is to last beyond this year, he will, by all appearances, have to wage a fierce battle and overcome some very serious and powerful hurdles. The writing on the wall, though, does not look good for the ol’ coach.
