Stoops continues to knock down Irish rumors

When last we left you regarding the Bob Stoops-Notre Dame “situation”, the Sooners head coach was saying that he would be at Oklahoma next year while Adam Schefter of ESPN was reporting that there was mutual interest between the Irish and Stoops.

One source went so far as to tell Schefter that “he believes an agreement is all but a formality, with some details, likely including the Oklahoma contract, still to be resolved.”

Schefter subsequently reported that a meeting between a search firm contracted by Notre Dame and a Stoops’ representative(s) was scheduled for Sunday night. It’s unclear if that meeting occurred, but “the word around the NFL is that they believe that Bob Stoops will wind up at Notre Dame, and he’s the leader in the clubhouse if they can get all the details ironed out.”

Following that on-air report, Tulsa World contacted Stoops and undertook a text-message conversation.

When the Tulsa World contacted Stoops via text message Monday night about ESPN’s report, Stoops replied, “You should know everything reported isn’t true.”

When asked if his statements during the afternoon teleconference should be believed, Stoops replied, “You should, if you do know me. I don’t lie.”

So, there you have it. Absolutely nothing cleared up, even as Stoops attempts to do his damndest to clear it up with his Nixonian “I am not a liar” rejoinder.

Once again, though, Stoops is getting Sabaned as almost no one is willing to take what a coach says at face value anymore, and will always toss a skeptical eye toward a coach even as he’s willing to offer up the most unequivocal of denials.
