FSU loses appeal, Bowden will lose wins

Bobby Bowden finished his legendary career with 389 wins, the last of which was a Gator Bowl triumph over West Virginia.

Based on the events of today, that total could drop down to as low as 375.

According to the Tallahassee Democrat, the NCAA has rejected Florida State’s appeal of sanctions that included vacating up to 14 wins a three year period last decade. The sanctions stemmed from academic-cheating scandal that involved upwards of 60 student-athletes, including some member of the football program.

FSU agreed to sanctions that included probation and scholarship reductions, but was fighting the vacating-of-wins aspect of the punishment. FSU argued that the school fully cooperated once it became aware of the issue.

The NCAA did not agree with that stance.

“The cooperative efforts of the university clearly did not outweigh the aggravating factors in this case -- the nature, number, scope and seriousness of the violations.”

This was FSU’s final appeals avenue.
