S. Miss QB battle down a combatant

Southern Miss quarterback Austin Davis was already facing a steep challenge in regaining his starting job. Now comes word that that he’ll be further handicapped in the fight.

According to the Jackson Clarion-Ledger, Davis will be “very limited” during the course of spring practice, which begins March 5 for the Golden Eagles.

Davis started all 13 games as a freshman in 2008, then the first six games of 2009 before going down with a foot injury.

The junior-to-be was replaced in the starting lineup by Martevious Young, and it was Young’s performance in the seven-game stretch to end the season that will setup a QB battle starting with summer camp.

Young threw for over 1,800 yards, 16 touchdowns and three interceptions in leading Southern Miss to a 4-3 record during Davis’ absence. For comparison’s sake, Davis threw for nearly 1,200 yards, and had 10 touchdowns to two interceptions.

For now, though, Young will get the vast majority of reps during spring practice. And a head start on the QB competition heading into summer.
