Nearly seven weeks after deciding to leave the Georgia football program, safety Makiri Pugh has found a new home.
But, not before creating a mini-controversy.
According to the Athens Banner-Herald, Pugh has decided to transfer to Colorado after visiting the school last week. Pugh informed the CU coaching staff of his decision Sunday.
One of his high school coaches, however, told the paper that Pugh was “very disappointed” in how Georgia handled the situation.
Josh Kranish of Charlotte Independence High School said that, even after head coach Mark Richt gave Pugh his unconditional release, “some of the other Division I schools that [Pugh] contacted called Georgia and never got a call back.”
Colorado phoned both Richt and former defensive coordinator Willie Martinez, Kranish said, and did not get a return call.
Wisconsin, North Carolina State and several other ACC schools attempted to get in touch with Richt regarding the circumstances behind the transfer but were unsuccessful.
Regardless, Pugh will have to sit out the 2010 season in order to satisfy the NCAA’s transfer rule.
