Severe blow: Bulls WR Griffin has broken ankle

Updating a story from earlier today, the specific nature of the ankle injury suffered by Sterling Griffin has been revealed, and it’s not good news for the South Florida program.

According to Greg Auman of the St. Petersburg Times, Griffin suffered a fractured/dislocated ankle during a voluntary workout Monday morning.

There’s no timetable on a return for the wide receiver just yet, although we think it’d be safe to assume that, given the severity of the injury, Griffin will likely not be available for the start of summer camp in a little over a month.

This is the second major injury hit the Bulls have taken at the position this offseason; in April, A.J. Love -- the school’s leading returning receiver -- suffered a torn ACL during USF’s spring game, and is expected to miss at least a good portion of the 2010 season as he recovers from the injury.

UPDATED 8:19 p.m. ET: There’s some good news on the Griffin injury front as head coach Skip Holtz told the Times that the receiver will be back on the field at some point this season. Just when that will be remains to be seen.

“He’s going to be a while, and we don’t know the extent of it all at this point,” Holtz said. “The bone is a six-to-eight week deal, right about the beginning of the season. I don’t know how much damage (there is) until some of the swelling (goes down), but very definitely, he’ll play for us this season.”
