Iowa starter Binns hit with drunk-driving charge

If nothing else, the news coming out this morning proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that college football coaches absolutely abhor this time of the year.

The Iowa City Press-Citizen is reporting this morning that Iowa defensive end Broderick Binns was arrested and charged very early Friday morning with drunk driving.

Binns was pulled over after police spotted his vehicle driving straight through a left turn lane, which is not necessarily the smartest thing to do at 12:57 in the morning after you’ve knocked back a few. An initial breathalyzer showed Binns was at a .097, although he improved on that number later with a .101.

Binns is two weeks shy of his 21st birthday.

Head coach Kirk Ferentz said that he was “very disappointed” upon learning of the arrest, and “the punishment will be handled internally” once all of the facts are gathered. As noted by the Press-Citizen, offensive lineman Kyle Calloway was arrested for the same offense -- albeit while riding a moped -- last summer and was suspended for the 2009 season opener.

Binns, a junior, started all 13 games for the Hawkeyes last season.
