At the end of their Papajohns.com bowl match-up with UConn, and his South Carolina Gamecocks on the wrong end of a 20-7, head coach Steve Spurrier apologized “to about 30,000 Gamecock fans” in attendance and labeled what just transpired “a sad, sad effort.”
The stats back-up that label as Spurrier’s offense gained just 205 yards of total offense while his defense allowed 146 years on the ground.
Nearly eight months later, and on the cusp of yet another season, the numbers are still gnawing at the Ol’ Ball Coach.
“Sometimes I’m asked, ticket sales are not quite where we hoped they would be. Well, I say, ‘Our fans remember the UConn game. And I remember the UConn game. And we weren’t very good,’” Spurrier told The State Wednesday after his annual media golf outing.
“And don’t tell us to forget it because we’re not going to forget it. We’re going to try our best to never ever have a performance like that again.”
No pressure, Stephen Garcia. No pressure at all.
