WVU starting LB Thomas given the all-clear to resume practice

Finally, after a couple of weeks filled with negatives off the field, West Virginia was basking in an on-field positive involving a key piece of their first-team defense.

Linebacker J.T. Thomas (no relation) had missed some time during the early portion of summer camp with what was described as a minor neck injury. An MRI of his neck shoulder and back confirmed that, yes, the injury was indeed minor and the senior weakside ‘backer was back on the field as the Mountaineers took to full pads for the first time (legally) this summer.

He was cleared today by the medical staff,” head coach Bill Stewart said. “He had an MRI this morning and he’s absolutely, 100 percent cleared to go. There is some joint - I believe I’m saying this right - irritation, which is a pain thing ... But there was a clear picture.”

Thomas has played in 36 games during his time in Morgantown, and Stewart appreciates what having that experience back on the field means for his defense.

“To have him back is really a blessing,’' Stewart said. “To have him healthy is No. 1. Plus, he brings experience to the table, much like a Reed Williams did; much like an Owen Schmitt or Marc Magro did.

“He’s like a student-coach and he had them fired up. Our upperclassmen are doing a tremendous job at all positions.”
