Terps lose starting left tackle for the season

Just a few days after Maryland gave up eight sacks in a loss to West Virginia, the unit responsible for that number has lost one of its best players.

Head coach Ralph Friedgen said Tuesday that starting left tackle Justin Gilbert has a torn ACL and will miss the remainder of the 2010 season.

“Justin was really playing very well for us. We were very pleased with him,” Friedgen said of the redshirt sophomore. “My major concern with losing an offensive lineman was being forced to play a redshirt freshman again.”

Unfortunately for Friedgen, he will be forced to do that which he feared as redshirt freshman R.J. Dill will slide from right tackle to left. Another redshirt freshman, Pete DeSouza, will take over for Dill on the right side.
