Dantonio surprises Spartans with unexpected visit

Five days after suffering a heart attack, head coach Mark Dantonio was back, albeit briefly and temporarily, with his Michigan State players Friday afternoon.

According to the Detroit Free Press, Dantonio made an unannounced appearance at MSU’s football facility, the first time he had met with his team since the health scare early Sunday morning. Dantonio attended a team meeting and the Spartans’ walk-through ahead of Saturday’s game against Northern Colorado.

Dantonio’s visit comes on the heels of his assistant coaches visiting him at home Wednesday night, a day after he was released from the hospital.

“Everyone happy to see Coach D and he is returning home for rest,” athletic director Mark Hollis wrote on Twitter. “Will watch tomorrow’s game at home.”

There has been no timeline given for when -- or even if -- Dantonio returns to the sidelines this season.

In his stead, offensive coordinator Don Treadwell will assume the head-coaching responsibilities.
