Taylor Martinez is just like the rest of us -- day to day

A collective lump went into the throats of Nebraska fans when starting quarterback Taylor Martinez (no relation) suffered a leg injury in the first half of the Cornhuskers’ “upset” of Missouri and did not return in the second half of the quasi blowout.

It appears, however, that the freshman is in little danger of missing much practice time, let alone any game time.

Initially reported as a bone bruise, head coach Bo Pelini revealed Monday that Martinez is actually suffering from a sprained ankle. Pelini said before practice that the injury is “kind of a day-to-day thing”, then afterwards said, basically, that there’s nothing to see here and y’all should just move on.

He’s doing good. He’s doing fine,” the coach said.

Martinez did not practice Monday, but will “probably” be available when the ‘Huskers take the field for practice Tuesday. As far as Saturday’s game against Iowa State is concerned, Pelini left little doubt that Martinez will suit up and play, barring a setback in practice this week of course.

“We don’t play guys if they’re hurt,” Pelini said. “If they’re healthy they play. We think he sure looks like he’s going to be healthy.”
