Whacking head coaches mid-season has been all the rage this year and, now, Kent State’s Doug Martin has been added to that exclusive list of axed A-listers Tim Brewster, Dan Hawkins and Todd Dodge.
Except this time Martin did it to himself.
Yesterday, after going 4-7 this season, Martin officially stated he will resign following the Golden Flashes’ last game of the year against Ohio. Martin is 28-53 in 7 seasons as Kent’s head coach, with his best record coming in 2006, when his team went 6-6.
“I want Kent State fans to know what a great group of assistant coaches we have here,” Martin said. “The character of these men is unquestioned and the job they’ve done is outstanding.”
The search for Kent State’s next coach will begin immediately and will in all likelihood -- like all other head coaching vacancies -- include Mark Mangino, Mike Leach, Guz Malzahn.
