Robbie Caldwell steps down as Vandy’s head coach

It’s been a rough last couple of days for turkeys all across this great country.

First, there was the whole Thanksgiving massacre thing. Now comes word that the “The Inseminator” will apparently have a lot of free time on his hands in the coming months.

According to the Nashville Tennessean, Robbie Caldwell will officially step down as Vanderbilt’s head coach at a 12:45 ET press conference. It’s uncertain whether this is a dismissal or a resignation, although it will likely be labeled as the latter for public consumption as Caldwell has stated in the past that he would like to continue on.

Ahead of the press conference, the school has released a statement from the now-former coach.

“Having the opportunity to be Vanderbilt’s head football coach has been a dream come true,” Caldwell said, “and I greatly appreciated the chance to serve, and I gave it my best. However, after a lot of reflection, I’ve realized it is time for me to step aside and let someone else pick up the hard work and efforts of our staff.”

Caldwell is in the midst of his first and now only season as the Commodores head coach after replacing Bobby Johnson, who abruptly retired less than two months before the start of the 2010 regular season. Vandy currently stands at 2-9 on the season, with only a game at Wake Forest tonight remaining on the schedule. Caldwell will coach the finale before the two sides part ways.

One name already being mentioned as a potential replacement is current Navy head coach Ken Niumatalolo.

Caldwell becomes the sixth head coach of a Div. 1-A football program -- Colorado, Minnesota, Ball State, Kent State and North Texas being the others -- to either step down or be dismissed since the start of the regular season.
