Four felony charges equals the boot for ‘Cuse LB

Malcolm Cater came to Syracuse as a three-star recruit who was viewed as a future anchor in the middle of the Orange’s defensive front seven.

A little more than ten months later, the freshman has found himself with an “impressive” litany of legal issues. And a ticket off the football team.

According to the Syracuse Post-Standard, the linebacker was arrested Saturday and charged with three counts of burglary, one count of grand larceny, and two counts of petit larceny. The burglary and grand larceny charges are felonies.

The charges stem from accusations that Cater burglarized three on-campus apartments, two on Friday and one that occurred during Thanksgiving break. A witness watched a person later identified as Cater carrying a large television into an apartment at 3 a.m. ET Saturday morning and called police, who subsequently discovered the two most recent break-ins as well as connecting him to one a couple of weeks ago.

Head coach Doug Marrone said yesterday that Cater has been dismissed from the football program.

“I’m aware of the criminal charges filed against Malcolm Cater by the Syracuse Police Department,” the coach said in a statement. “Cater is no longer part of the Syracuse football program.”

Cater had played in all 12 games this season.

Syracuse will close out their 2010 season Dec. 30 in the New Era Pinstripe Bowl against Kansas State.
