Vandy shifting focus to Terps OC Franklin

OK, here we go again.

After getting a snub job from Auburn offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn, Vanderbilt is apparently turning their attention to an ACC coordinator as their replacement for Robbie Caldwell.

The Washington Post -- the same paper that reported Malzahn had accepted the Vandy job, incidentally -- is reporting that Maryland coordinator James Franklin is expected to become the Commodores’ next head coach. That’s not exactly a monumental leap for the paper to make, however, as it’s been rumored that Franklin would be next in line if the Tigers’ OC turned down the job.

Citing two sources close to the coach, the Post reports that contract talks between the two sides are taking place Tuesday, and a hiring could be announced either later on today or tomorrow. Vandy officials reportedly reached out to Franklin Monday night after they received word from Malzahn that he was no longer interested in the position.

Franklin may not have been Vandy’s first choice, but, much like with Miami and Al Golden, it’s a helluva football hire for the school. Just because Franklin doesn’t have the name that Malzahn has doesn’t mean he’s not a very good football coach. Vandy’s a tough enough job as it is; people need to give him a chance if the latest report is indeed accurate and he will be taking over the Commodores program.
