Memphis QB Cannon Smith, son of FedEx CEO, arrested

Memphis’ season-opening starting quarterback Cannon Smith has found himself in a little bit of postseason legal hot water, the Memphis Commercial-Appeal is reporting.

According to the paper, Smith was arrested early Wednesday morning on charges of public intoxication and disorderly conduct. The arrest occurred at around 3:30 a.m. local time, although the details of what led to the charges are not yet known.

Head coach Larry Porter is aware of the arrest.

“We are aware of the incident that occurred involving Cannon Smith,” Porter said in a statement. “The matter currently is under investigation, and we are in the process of gathering all of the facts before making any decisions or public statements.”

Smith, the son of FedEx CEO and Memphis’ largest athletic booster Fred Smith, started the first two games of the year before suffering a concussion and ceding the starting job to freshman Ryan Williams for the final ten games.
