Report: Edsall is Terps’ pick to replace Friedgen

In less than 24 hours, UConn has lost their BcS game to Oklahoma and their top offensive player to the NFL draft.

Now, it appears they have lost their head coach as well.

The Washington Post is reporting Sunday afternoon that Randy Edsall has emerged as the leading candidate to become Maryland’s next head coach. ESPN.com‘s Joe Schad takes it a step further, tweeting shortly after the Post‘s report came out that “Maryland has chosen Randy Edsall as head coach.”

Schad added that there is a team meeting with athletic director Kevin Anderson scheduled for tonight.

In its story, the Post writes that Edsall and his family are traveling to College Park today for a tour of the campus.

Of course, the alleged Edsall hiring means Mike Leach is presumably out as a candidate. Leach had been far and away considered the front-runner for the job. But, the paper reports, the ex-Texas Tech head coach’s chances at the job diminished in the past 48 hours -- despite a very good two-day series of interviews last week -- because a certain faction at the school have been opposed to his hiring due to the way his exit from Tech went down.
