Stanford loses defensive coordinator to 49ers, too

Earlier today, it was reported that Stanford assistant Greg Roman was headed to San Francisco to reunite with Jim Harbaugh as the 49ers’ offensive coordinator.

This evening, new head coach David Shaw appears to have officially lost out on any shot at retaining the coach he’d hoped would be his other coordinator as well.

Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com is reporting that defensive coordinator Vic Fangio has agreed to assume the same position with the 49ers. The move is far from unexpected as, even before Harbaugh landed the NFL job, speculation was that Fangio would follow Harbaugh regardless of where he ended.

Like Roman, Fangio received an interview for the Stanford opening upon Harbaugh’s departure.

Fangio had recently completed his first season with the Cardinal after spending the previous 26 seasons at the professional level. More so than Roman, Fangio’s exit could be the biggest blow to Shaw’s attempts to assemble a first-year coaching staff. In 2009, the Cardinal finished No. 69 in scoring defense (26.5) and No. 90 in total defense (402.7); in Fangio’s first and only year, they finished No. 10 in scoring (17.4) and No. 21 in yards allowed (322.8).
