Szakacsy leaving Sun Devils to pursue other interests

Stuck behind both Brock Osweiler and Steven Threet on Arizona State’s depth chart, quarterback Samson Szakacsy has decided to hang up his collegiate cleats, the Arizona Republic is reporting.

The senior-to-be, though, claimed that his status on the depth chart had nothing to do with stepping away from his final season of eligibility. Rather, Szakacsy told the paper that it was time for him to move on and pursue other interests.

The religious studies major is scheduled to earn his degree in a couple of months. While the QB is looking forward to his other pursuits -- including studying abroad in Jerusalem -- he acknowledges that stepping away from the team aspect of the game is difficult.

“The toughest part about this is I just love the team so much,” Szakacsy told the paper. “I’ve been playing football since I was a little kid so there’s always going to be that attachment, but this is something I feel like I got to do. I’m concentrating on my studies this spring, taking my religion classes and I’m finally getting into what I’m going to be doing.”

Bravo, young man. Bravo.

During his time with the Sun Devils, Szakacsy completed 40 of 67 for 414 yards and four touchdowns with two interceptions. As a member of ASU’s 2007 recruiting class, Szakacsy was a three-star recruit and the No. 20 pro-style quarterback according to Rivals.com.
