Nate Montana might be looking at transfer from Irish

A couple of weeks ago, Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly touched on the bounty of quarterbacks that will litter the Irish’s roster in 2011.

“We can’t work with six quarterbacks,” Kelly said. “There will be some paring down. There will be some guys that understand if they’re not in that top four, they’re not going to be able to get reps at the position.”

Apparently, some self-paring of the QB depth chart may be in the offing.

By way of the Chicago Tribune, the University of Montana’s student newspaper is reporting that Joe Montana met with the football team’s head coach on Tuesday. One of the NFL great’s sons, Nick Montana, is a quarterback at Washington, but it’s believed the meeting concerned his other son Nate Montana. Nate is one of the six QBs Kelly mentioned earlier.

Grizzlies’ head coach Robin Pflugrad refused to confirm that his conversation concerned a potential transfer for Nate Montana.

"(Montana) has four kids and we talked about them all,” Pflugrad said.

In addition to Montana, Tommy Rees, Dayne Crist, Andrew Hendrix, Luke Massa and Everett Golson are currently on the Notre Dame roster. Rees and Crist are expected to compete for the starting job.
