Mark Mangino praises new ‘Huskers OC

As the dust begins to clear from Bo Pelini‘s decision to undertake a rather significant shakeup of his Nebraska coaching staff, more than a couple of members of Cornhusker Nation are wondering what the changes will mean for the 2011 season and beyond, especially when it comes to the offense and the new coordinator.

Tim Beck, who spent last season as running backs coach, will replace Shawn Watson, the much-maligned offensive coordinator the past four seasons who was “not retained” by Pelini after a month’s worth of speculation earlier this year.

One person who knows Beck well is Mark Mangino. The former Kansas head coach had Beck on his Jayhawks staff from 2005 through 2007 and, while he doesn’t know exactly what shape Nebraska’s offense will take under his former assistant, he does, as expected, expect great things from Beck’s offense.

Even as he states that case in an amazing range of generalities and coach speak.

“Let me point something out that I think is extremely important: Tim is a very good teacher and a very good communicator,” Mangino said. “The offensive players at Nebraska will understand the expectations. Tim will clearly state those. And he will have a plan to reach those. ...

“I’ve talked to Tim off and on in the last couple months, and just talked philosophy. And I think Tim is going to put together what he knows best, and be smart enough to know he’s going to do the things on offense that the players at Nebraska can do.”

Well, that certainly clears it up.
