Shocker: Whipple no longer No. 1 QB on Miami’s depth chart

Upon the release of Miami’s spring depth chart, more than a few eyebrows were raised when Spencer Whipple was named the No. 1 quarterback ahead of the two players at the position, Jacory Harris and Stephen Morris, who were considered to be the legitimate contenders for the starting job.

Many thought it was just a message being shot across Harris’ and Morris’ bow, that the new coaching staff wasn’t going to hand anything to anyone. Even Whipple himself conceded it was “going to be very hard” to maintain that top-dog status, saying that “obviously the pressure is on me to keep my job.”

Less than three weeks later, Whipple has proven the “very hard” part to be a very prescient one.

The Hurricanes released their second depth chart of the spring Tuesday and, to the surprise of no one who doesn’t have Whipple blood coursing through their veins, Harris is the “new” No.1 quarterback, followed by Morris at No. 2. That means, of course, Whipple has tumbled to his rightful spot at No. 3 on the depth chart.

QB wasn’t the only position on the depth chart to be shuffled, though. Storm Johnson is the new No. 1 running back, followed by Lamar Miller and Mike James. The latter had entered the spring atop the depth chart.

Additionally, Seantrel Henderson, rumored to be one of six players suspended for the opener, is now listed as the co-No. 1 after sitting in the backup slot to open the spring sessions.
