Iowa transfer Wegher no longer with Sooners

Well, as a Rick Pitino companion would opine, that was certainly quick.

A mere two months after landing at Oklahoma, running back Brandon Wegher has now, well, un-landed. Head coach Bob Stoops said Wednesday evening that the transfer from Iowa is no longer with the team.

Stoops neither specified why Wegher had left nor seemed the least bit concerned -- or surprised -- about the development.

“Yeah, he’s not with us anymore,” Stoops said. “That didn’t last real long. ...

“We’ve got a few backs as it is, so we’ll be OK.”

Wegher had left the Hawkeyes football team back in August and, ultimately, was granted a release from his Iowa scholarship in December. The junior-to-be had hoped to receive a waiver from the NCAA that would’ve allowed him to play for the Sooners in 2011, but that request was denied. As it was, he was planning on practicing with the team as a walk-on starting in spring practice but, obviously, those plans fell through for whatever reason.

In 2009, Wegher set an Iowa record for freshmen with eight rushing touchdowns on his way to 641 yards rushing.
