Doege is Texas Tech’s clear No. 1 QB headed into summer

After their first practice of the spring last month, offensive coordinator Neal Brown said that Seth Doege was “definitely ahead” in the race to become Texas Tech’s starting quarterback. Doege then appeared to solidify his grip on the job during a couple of scrimmages.

As the Red Raiders put the finishing touches on their set of 15 sessions before some schools have even started theirs, where does the QB competition stand?

A crowd of just over 12,000 watched Doege put the final stake in his claim to the position, throwing for 317 yards and four touchdowns in Tech’s annual spring game. According to the Dallas Morning News, head coach Tommy Tuberville said that Doege is the clear No. 1 QB entering the summer.

While Tuberville didn’t address the QB position specifically in quotes distributed by the school, the second-year coach did seem pleased with the overall effort of his squad.

“This was a good day for us,” Tuberville said. “I thought it was a well-played game that will give us a good look at where we stand heading into the offseason. We had guys step up on both sides of the ball and really play well. We had a beautiful day and a great crowd. I really want to thank all the fans that came out today.”

While there is still a significant period of time between now and the start of the regular season, it would be a major surprise -- or take a significant injury -- if Doege is not under center when the curtain opens on the 2011 season.
