Beavers might get Katz back for half of spring

It was not exactly a state secret that Oregon State’s starting quarterback, Ryan Katz, would miss at least a portion of spring practice due to offseason surgery on his throwing hand/wrist.

Prior to the start of the spring sessions March 28, head coach Mike Riley was cautiously optimistic that Katz would be available at some point, “and it’s possible he’ll be fully ready for the start of practice.”

While the cautiously optimistic approach didn’t pay dividends -- the Beavers opened the spring Monday sans Katz on the practice field -- optimism still reigns supreme when it comes to the triggerman of OSU’s 2011 offense.

“He had a cat-scan today and if everything goes good with that, he can start slowly throwing again,” said Riley.

“My goal would be to have him for three of the five weeks we have. … maybe by the third week we’ll have him out there taking some turns.”

Regardless of when Katz actually takes the field this spring, he’s expected to be 100-percent healthy for the start of summer camp. Provided he doesn’t suffer a setback between now and then, of course.
