USC’s Armstead cleared for limited work

Amidst fears that he may be suffering from some type of heart condition, USC’s Armond Armstead has been given a limited nod from medical personnel to resume a cautious level of physical activity.

When he will be cleared to return to the playing field -- practice or otherwise -- remains to be seen.

The Trojans defensive end was given medical clearance Friday to do some running as well as lift weights for the first time since being hospitalized for a few days last month. Armstead said he “felt good”, although what led to chest pains brought on by exertion and the subsequent hospital stay is still an unknown.

“I won’t know any real information until they’re done with all the tests,” Armstead said.

“I’m just trying to take it step by step.”

Armstead, who started 10 games in 2010 and is being counted on to be an experienced anchor of USC’s defensive line, is very likely to miss the remainder of spring practice. The school is cautiously optimistic, though, that he will receive medical clearance and be available for the start of summer camp.
