Barring something drastic, Chizik doesn’t see No. 1 QB named until two-a-days

After Auburn’s spring game Saturday, head coach Gene Chizik lamented the inconsistency of the two players vying for the starting quarterback job and intimated that a decision likely wouldn’t be forthcoming until sometime after the start of summer camp.

Two days later, Chizik all but chiseled that notion in stone.

Speaking after the 15th and final practice session of the spring, Chizik said Barrett Trotter (14) and Clint Moseley (15) “have a huge role as we move through the next four months”, but neither will be moving forward with the label of starter quite yet.

Unless something drastic happens, I don’t anticipate us being able to make a decision before sometime in two-a-days,” Chizik said according to the Columbus Ledger-Enquirer. “You never say never, but again, I’d have to see a clear-cut definitive change and that would be hard for us to do because we’re not going to be out there.”

As has been the case throughout the entire spring, both Moseley and Trotter mixed in some big plays during Saturday’s A-Day game along with a fair amount of uneven play. As a result, neither player put any distance between himself and the competition, and both will enter the summer’s voluntary workouts looking to gain an edge before the start of camp. Moseley told the media after today’s spring finale that he’s looking forward to the opportunity.

“I have to carry a whole new outlook, a whole new demeanor to summer,” he said. “I used to go into the summer thinking I’ve got to work out, this little hour thing, no big deal.

“Well now, it’s a big deal to me personally. Either I take advantage of the opportunity of getting better as a leader and trying to actually get my teammates better, or it can hurt me.”
