UNLV names Caleb Herring their starting QB

Auburn did it last week. So did Kansas and Iowa State. As the calendar turns to a new week, now it’s UNLV’s turn to do as such.

Head coach Bobby Hauck, fresh off a contract extension, announced over the weekend that Caleb Herring will be the Rebels’ starter heading into the 2011 season. The sophomore had been in a camp-long battle with JUCO transfer Sean Reilly.

“Caleb just played better,” Hauck said. “He has a better grasp of what is going on and a great handle on the offense. He has done a nice job in camp so far.”

“It feels good to earn the spot,” Herring said. “It was my goal from day one and it is great to be named the starter. I will still go out there and compete and practice as hard as I can every day.”

Herring played in eight games last season, throwing for 365 yards and four touchdowns.

The Rebels will open the season in Madison against Wisconsin, the No. 11 team in the country in the Associated Press’ preseason poll.
